When it comes to vehicle restoration, a professional paint job does much more than give your car a fresh, glossy look. Whether you’re restoring a classic car or giving your day-to-day car a makeover, investing in high-quality auto painting can make a huge difference. The professionals at Wrenchers LLC in Michigan know that a paint job isn’t only about appearance but can help in performance, value and longevity. Here’s what a new paint job can really do for your car.

Restore Original Beauty and Character

Over time, a car’s exterior can fade, chip or rust, especially when exposed to harsh weather or road debris. A vehicle restoration paint job brings your car back to its original shine. You can match the factory colors or choose a custom finish that grabs attention. For classic car enthusiasts, professional painting helps preserve the authenticity of vintage models.

Boost Your Car’s Resale Value

Thinking about selling your car at some point? A fresh, flawless paint job can significantly increase its market value. First impressions matter—and potential buyers are more likely to pay top dollar for a vehicle that looks brand new. This is especially true for restored cars, where a high-quality finish reflects attention to detail and care.

Protect the Body from Damage

Paint isn’t just cosmetic. It also serves as the first line of defense against corrosion, UV damage and moisture. Cracked or peeling paint exposes the metal underneath, leading to rust and costly repairs. A professional auto paint job, like the one Wrenchers can provide, uses top-grade materials and sealing techniques to shield your vehicle and extend its life.

Customize Your Ride

Want your vehicle to stand out? Do you have a car show coming up and want to show your car off? Custom paint jobs allow you to express your personality and style. From matte finishes to racing stripes to color-shifting effects, modern auto painting techniques offer endless possibilities. A vehicle restoration shop can help you design a look that’s unique and professional.

Improve Overall Restoration Results

If you’re already investing in restoring the engine, interior or suspension, don’t overlook the exterior. The final paint job ties everything together, turning a good restoration into a show-stopping one. Skilled auto painters ensure that every detail is executed to perfection.

A professional paint job is one of the smartest investments you can make for your vehicle—especially if you’re committed to restoring it right. From aesthetic appeal to long-term protection, the benefits are clear. Trust a skilled auto restoration team to bring your vision for your vintage vehicle to life.

For classic car enthusiasts, restoring a vintage vehicle to its original glory is a dream come true. One of the most comprehensive ways to achieve this is through a full frame-off restoration. But what exactly does this process entail, and what should you expect when undertaking such a project? Wrenchers LLC in Michigan offers this service and understands it can sound intimidating. Here are the steps, benefits and expectations of a frame-off restoration to help you make an informed decision.

What Is a Full Frame-Off Restoration?

A full frame-off restoration is the most thorough type of classic car restoration. This process involves completely disassembling the vehicle, separating the body from the frame and meticulously restoring each individual component to like-new condition. The goal is to return the car to its original factory specifications—or even better.

This type of restoration is ideal for vintage cars suffering from extensive rust, damage or aging. It is also perfect for collectors looking to preserve the authenticity and value of their classic vehicle.

Steps in a Full Frame-Off Restoration

A frame-off restoration is a detailed, multi-step process that requires time, expertise and patience. Here’s what you can expect:

1. Disassembly

The first step is to completely disassemble the car. Every part, from the body panels to the smallest bolt, is carefully removed. The body is then separated from the frame, allowing for a thorough inspection of both components.

2.Frame Restoration

Once the frame is exposed, it is cleaned and sandblasted. Then, it’s inspected for damage. Any necessary repairs or reinforcements are made before applying a protective coating to prevent rust and corrosion.

3.Body Repair and Refinishing

The body of the car is stripped down to bare metal to remove old paint, rust and imperfections. Repairs are then made to any dents or rusted areas before the body is primed, painted and polished.

4.Engine and Drivetrain Overhaul

The engine, transmission and drivetrain are completely rebuilt or replaced with high-performance parts. This ensures the vehicle not only looks new but runs smoothly and reliably.

5.Interior Restoration

A frame-off restoration also includes restoring or replacing the interior components such as seats, dashboard, upholstery and trim. Modern upgrades can be added while maintaining the classic aesthetic.

6.Reassembly and Testing

Once every part has been restored, the car is meticulously reassembled. Experts like Wrenchers LLC do testing to ensure that all systems function correctly, and adjustments are made to guarantee top performance.

What to Expect from a Frame-Off Restoration

Time commitment. Be prepared to take your time – Rome wasn’t built in a day! A full restoration can take several months to years, depending on the vehicle’s condition and the level of customization.

Cost considerations. This is a labor-intensive process and can be expensive, but the investment significantly increases the car’s value.

Attention to detail. Expect a near-perfect restoration with high-quality craftsmanship and precision.

A frame-off restoration is the ultimate way to preserve and enhance the beauty, performance and value of a classic vehicle. If you’re considering this type of restoration, the team at Wrenchers LLC can guide you through every step of the journey.

If you have any questions about a frame-off restoration or are looking for further insights for protecting your classic car or truck, give us a call or stop by our shop.

At Wrenchers LLC, we are classic, antique and hot rod enthusiasts, and that shows in the craftsmanship of our vehicle restorations.

Winter weather can be brutal on any vehicle (especially in Michigan), but classic cars require extra care to maintain their performance. If you take your vintage ride out for an occasional winter drive and want to ensure it’s protected from the elements, Wrenchers LLC has some expert tips to keep your classic car in top shape during the colder months.

Wash and Wax Before the Cold Sets In

Before winter arrives, give your classic car a thorough wash and apply a high-quality wax. Dirt, road salt and moisture can accelerate rust and corrosion, so a protective layer of wax acts as a barrier against these harsh elements.

Use a Car Cover Designed for Winter Conditions

If you need to park your car outside, invest in a weatherproof, breathable car cover. This helps prevent moisture buildup while shielding your vehicle from snow, ice and road salt.

Keep Your Undercarriage Clean and Protected

Road salt is one of the biggest threats to your vintage vehicle’s undercarriage. Regularly rinse the underside with warm water to remove salt and grime. Consider applying an anti-rust spray or undercoating to further protect against corrosion.

Store in a Garage or Shelter When Possible

If you have access to a garage, keep your classic car indoors during winter. A climate-controlled garage is ideal, but if that’s not an option, using a car storage bubble or dehumidifier can help reduce moisture damage.

Use Winter-Grade Fluids

Switch to winter-grade engine oil and antifreeze to keep your engine running smoothly in cold temperatures. Ensure your coolant is at the correct mixture to prevent freezing and overheating issues.

Protect Your Tires

Cold temperatures can cause tire pressure to drop, leading to uneven wear or flats. Check tire pressure regularly and inflate to the recommended level. If you’re storing your car for the season, consider using tire cradles or lifting the car on jack stands to prevent flat spots.

Keep the Battery Charged

Cold weather can drain a car battery quickly. If your classic car is parked for an extended period, use a battery maintainer or trickle charger to keep it fully charged and prevent damage.

Avoid Driving in Harsh Conditions

If possible, avoid driving your classic car during heavy snow, ice storms or when roads are heavily salted. If you must drive, rinse your car thoroughly afterward to remove any salt or debris.

Seal Windows and Doors

Check the weather stripping around your windows and doors to prevent cold air, moisture and snow from seeping in. Replace any damaged seals to maintain a snug, weatherproof fit.

Plan for Emergency Situations

If you’re taking your classic car out during winter, carry a basic emergency kit with jumper cables, a blanket, gloves, a flashlight and a small shovel. You never know when you might need it.

By following these steps, you can ensure that your vintage vehicle remains in pristine condition even during the harsh winter months. Whether you’re storing it away or braving the cold roads, proper maintenance is key to preserving your classic car for years to come.

If you have any questions about a frame-off restoration or are looking for further insights for protecting your classic car or truck, give us a call or stop by our shop.

Cars like the Ford Fox Body Mustang and sixth-generation Chevy Camaro are icons of American performance. These cars offer a classic blend of power, style and driving excitement. With the right upgrades, they can achieve even greater levels of performance and look even more aggressive. Whether you’re looking to increase horsepower, enhance handling or give your ride a custom touch, Wrenchers LLC can help you unlock your car’s full potential. Here are the best upgrades to transform your Fox Body or sixth-generation Camaro into a true performance machine.

Cold Air Intake (CAI)

Upgrading to a cold air intake is one of the most cost-effective ways to improve horsepower and throttle response. By delivering cooler, denser air to the engine, a CAI helps optimize combustion, which results in more power. This is especially noticeable in the Fox Body Mustang, which benefits greatly from improved air intake. Plus, you’ll get a more aggressive engine sound that will turn heads wherever you go.

High-Performance Exhaust System

A performance exhaust system is key to unlocking your car’s potential. Whether you own a Fox Body Mustang or a sixth-generation Chevy Camaro, a cat-back exhaust system or long-tube headers will reduce backpressure, improve airflow and give your car a deeper, more aggressive exhaust note. It’s an upgrade that both enhances performance and amplifies your car’s presence on the road.

Supercharger or Turbocharger

If you’re looking for a serious power boost, consider adding a supercharger or turbocharger to your engine. Both options force more air into the combustion chamber, increasing horsepower and torque. This is particularly beneficial for the sixth-generation Camaro, which can handle the extra power from forced induction. Whether you opt for a Roots-type supercharger or a turbo setup, these upgrades will give your car neck-snapping acceleration and enhanced top-end power.

Performance Tuning & ECU Remapping

After installing performance upgrades like a CAI or exhaust system, a performance tune or ECU remap is essential to optimize the car’s performance. Tuning the engine management system ensures that the air-fuel ratio, ignition timing and other parameters are in perfect harmony. For the Fox Body Mustang—especially if you’ve swapped in a more modern engine or forced induction—tuning will help you extract every last bit of performance, making your car faster and more responsive.

Upgraded Suspension

Suspension is one of the most important upgrades for improving handling, especially if you want to take your Fox Body Mustang or Camaro to the track. Performance coilovers, adjustable shocks and sway bars will enhance cornering stability, reduce body roll and provide a more controlled ride. The Fox Body Mustang, with its lighter chassis, benefits greatly from these upgrades to improve both track performance and street handling.

Performance Brakes

More power means the need for better stopping power. Upgrading your brake system is a must. Performance brake kits—which include larger rotors, multi-piston calipers and high-performance pads—are crucial for improving braking performance, especially during high-speed driving or aggressive cornering. These upgrades are particularly important for the sixth-generation Camaro, which has significant horsepower potential and needs brakes that can handle the extra power.

Wheels & Tires

Lighter, wider wheels can significantly improve both the performance and appearance of your Fox Body Mustang or sixth-generation Camaro. Wider tires provide better grip, which translates to better handling, especially during hard acceleration or sharp cornering. Lighter wheels also reduce rotational mass, making your car more responsive. If you want your car to perform as good as it looks, this is an upgrade you won’t want to overlook.

Appearance Mods: Hood Vents, Splitters and Spoilers

Aerodynamic upgrades like hood vents, front splitters and rear spoilers not only improve your car’s look but can also enhance performance. Hood vents help reduce engine bay temperatures; splitters increase downforce and spoilers reduce drag and lift. These upgrades are a perfect fit for the aggressive look of the Fox Body Mustang or sixth-generation Camaro, and they provide an added benefit of improved high-speed stability and cooling.

Upgrading your vintage car is one of the most rewarding ways to improve its power, handling and appearance. For Fox Body Mustangs and sixth-generation Chevy Camaros, the right performance and aesthetic mods can unlock your car’s full potential, making it more powerful, better-handling and more stylish than ever before. With Wrenchers’ expert installation and high-quality parts, you can ensure that every upgrade is done right, giving you the ultimate driving experience.

Ready to transform your Ford Fox Body or Chevy Camaro into the ultimate car? Wrenchers is here to help with expert advice, top-tier upgrades and flawless installation. Let’s take your ride to the next level.

Renovating a vintage vehicle is a labor of love, especially when it comes to reviving its interior. The interior of a classic car is more than just seats, dashboard and door panels; it’s the environment you’ll spend most of your time in when you take your vehicle for a cruise. Wrenchers LLC has a guide to help you through the essential considerations for a successful vintage vehicle interior renovation.

Preserve Originality vs. Modern Comfort

One of the first decisions in a vintage car restoration is whether to maintain the original look or incorporate modern features for added comfort. Authenticity is key for many classic car enthusiasts, especially those aiming to retain the vehicle’s original value. However, modern materials and upgrades—like additional padding or heated seats—can significantly enhance the driving experience. Balancing originality with comfort is a personal choice, but keep in mind that originality often fetches a higher value in the collector’s market.

Research and Source Authentic Materials

Original materials like leather, vinyl and cloth can give the interior an authentic look and feel. Search for reputable suppliers who specialize in vintage auto upholstery, as they can provide materials that match the colors, patterns and textures from your vehicle’s era. Check out vintage car forums and communities for recommendations on trusted suppliers. In some cases, it may be possible to repurpose parts of the original upholstery if it’s still in good condition.

Consider the Condition of the Dashboard and Instruments

The dashboard and its instruments are focal points of any vintage car interior. Restoration here can involve anything from refinishing surfaces to replacing gauges, steering wheels and switches. When possible, retain or repair original gauges and instruments, as these details often contribute significantly to the car’s value and authenticity. If the original parts are damaged beyond repair, consider finding replacements from vintage car part dealers.

Upholstery and Carpet Restoration

Upholstery and carpet are among the most visible and impactful components of a vehicle’s interior. If the upholstery is worn out, carefully remove the existing material and inspect the seats’ foam and springs, replacing them as necessary. Upholstery repairs can be intricate, so if you’re not an expert, consider hiring professionals like Wrenchers LLC who specialize in classic cars. For carpets, look for replacement kits specific to your make and model, which often have pre-cut pieces that match the original fit.

Steering Wheel and Gear Shifter Restoration

The steering wheel and gear shifter are tactile points that you interact with every time you drive. Over time, these parts can develop wear or cracks. Original steering wheels and shifters can often be repaired, but if they’re beyond salvaging, look for high-quality reproductions that maintain the vintage feel. Restored or well-chosen replacement parts not only enhance aesthetics but also improve driving comfort.

Upgrade the Sound System with Caution

While the interior’s look is important, so is the driving experience. Many classic car owners wish to upgrade the sound system but hesitate to sacrifice authenticity. Hidden sound systems are a popular solution, allowing modern sound capabilities without compromising the original appearance. Seek out options like Bluetooth-capable radios that fit within the original dash cutouts, maintaining the vintage look while allowing modern convenience.

Lighting and Electrical Work

Vintage vehicle lighting is usually softer than today’s LEDs, but there are ways to upgrade interior lighting without compromising style. Consider adding discreet ambient lighting under the dash or seats for functionality without taking away from the car’s classic feel. Additionally, inspect the electrical wiring and switches, as these can degrade over time. Faulty wiring can lead to more severe issues, so addressing these problems early can save time and money.

Budgeting for the Renovation

Interior restoration costs can add up quickly, especially if you’re sourcing rare materials or hiring professionals. Set a realistic budget and prioritize essential elements like seating, dashboard instruments and upholstery. Planning in stages can help manage expenses, and reaching out to fellow car enthusiasts can uncover cost-saving tips and reputable restoration shops.

Restoring the interior of a vintage vehicle requires careful attention to detail, a respect for authenticity and an eye for quality. With the right materials, skilled craftsmanship, and a clear vision, you can bring a classic car interior back to its former glory. Whether your goal is personal satisfaction or increasing the car’s market value, a well-planned interior restoration will reward you with a stunning, period-accurate ride that stands the test of time.

Many classic car enthusiasts carry a lot of pride in their vintage vehicle. It’s no surprise, as these vehicles hold timeless beauty and craftsmanship, and remind us of an era when driving was as much about the experience as it was about getting from point A to point B. However, with age comes the need for upgrades to ensure safety, performance and comfort. Wrenchers LLC understands its importance and offers full-scale upgrading services. Upgrading your vintage vehicle can breathe new life into your classic car while maintaining its nostalgic charm. Here’s a look at why upgrading your vintage vehicle is a smart move.

Enhanced Safety Features

Safety first! Safety standards have evolved significantly over the decades, and while vintage vehicles are beautiful, many lack the modern safety features we’ve come to rely on. Upgrading your classic car with anti-lock brakes (ABS), airbags, seat belts and improved suspension can drastically reduce the risk of accidents. Installing a more modern braking system ensures quicker response times, while modern headlights and taillights improve visibility on the road.

Additionally, upgrading to a stronger frame and reinforcing structural components can protect you in the event of an accident. These safety upgrades can be discreetly integrated without affecting the car’s aesthetic appeal. Your vehicle will look just as good, while being far safer to drive.

Improved Performance

Vintage vehicles often lack the horsepower and efficiency of modern cars. By upgrading the engine, transmission and exhaust system, you can significantly boost performance without losing the classic appeal of the car. Modern engines are not only more powerful but also more fuel-efficient, allowing you to enjoy the thrill of driving a classic vehicle without sacrificing performance.

An upgraded engine can also reduce maintenance costs in the long run, as modern components tend to be more reliable and easier to find compared to vintage parts. Whether you’re looking to increase speed, enhance fuel economy or improve the overall driving experience, performance upgrades are essential for any vintage car owner.

Better Fuel Efficiency

Most vintage cars were built in an era when fuel economy wasn’t a primary concern. We all know that times have changed, however. Upgrading your vehicle’s fuel system, including carburetors, fuel injectors and exhaust systems, can dramatically improve your car’s fuel efficiency. Installing a more modern engine or converting the vehicle to run on electric or hybrid power can also reduce emissions and contribute to a more sustainable driving experience.

With unpredictable fuel costs, improving fuel efficiency is a smart investment that can save you money over time. It also allows you to enjoy your vintage car more frequently without worrying about excessive fuel consumption.

Modern Comforts and Technology

While classic cars are iconic, they are not necessarily the most comfortable cars on the road. Upgrading your vintage vehicle’s interior can include installing air conditioning, heated seats, a modern stereo system, GPS navigation and even Bluetooth connectivity. These upgrades make your driving experience more comfortable and enjoyable, especially on long road trips.

Additionally, integrating modern technology doesn’t have to detract from the vintage look. Many manufacturers offer retro-style technology that blends seamlessly with the original design, allowing you to enjoy modern comforts without compromising the car’s authentic appeal.

Increased Resale Value

What happens if it’s time to think about selling your beloved car? A well-maintained and upgraded vintage vehicle can command a higher resale value compared to an unmodified one. Classic car collectors appreciate vehicles that have been upgraded with modern safety, performance and comfort features, especially when these upgrades have been done tastefully and without compromising the car’s original charm. Investing in upgrades can make your vintage vehicle more desirable to potential buyers, ensuring that you get the best return on your investment should you decide to sell it in the future.

Upgrading your vintage vehicle offers numerous benefits. By embracing these upgrades, you can keep the spirit of your vintage vehicle alive for years to come while enjoying all the benefits that modern technology has to offer.

Wrenchers, LLC in Detroit, Michigan, pride themselves on the care and skill they have in frame-off restorations and exterior and interior restoration projects. The exterior of a vintage car certainly catches your attention when it’s tooling down the highway, but it’s the interior that the driver enjoys on that ride. There are 8 vintage vehicle interior restoration steps that we can take when we work with our customers to ensure their classic car restoration gives them the car of their dreams.

What are some of the interior restorations our vintage and classic car and truck professionals do for our customers? Here are 8 of the many we do and why.

The interior of a classic car usually needs to have new life breathed into it as part of a restoration project. Restoring the interior is a journey into the life cycle of the vehicle. Our professionals blend artistry with craftsmanship, and we recapture the original splendor of your classic car.

To correctly restore the interior of a vintage car or truck, the professional you work with must understand the era of your vehicle and the style of that era. A quality restoration requires an understanding of the materials, styles and colors. We research what the car’s original interior looked like and use that as a starting point.

Before the project begins, we will assess the current condition and evaluate the upholstery, dashboard, door panels and carpeting. We are looking for signs of wear, tear or damage. Following the assessment, we prepare a restoration plan and let you know whether it’s possible to repair or refurbish the existing interior or if a complete replacement is necessary.

When it comes to interior restoration, the reupholstering is one of the most significant and costly parts of an interior project. We will match the materials and design of the era, or the owner can choose their own materials to use to give their car its unique flair.

So many vintage cars and trucks featured detailed woodwork and metal trim in the interior, and they can be restored if the vintage restoration shop you work with has the specialized skills and tools. Make certain you ask about the skills of the restoration pro.

Because the dashboard and its instrument panel are the focal part of the interior, it could require replacing the gauges, knob and switches if the current ones cannot be refurbished. Functionality is also crucial to this part of the restoration – the speedometer, for example, needs to work correctly.

The carpeting in a vintage car or truck typically requires replacement to improve the appearance of the interior.

Modern upgrades and electrical repair and replacement are usually part of the interior restoration project. Many classic car purists want to embrace complete authenticity, and if that’s the case, make sure the restorer you’re working with will work with you, as some restorers want to incorporate modern safety conveniences.

8 Vintage Vehicle Interior Restoration Steps

There are bound to be cost overruns and challenges in the restoration project because until the vehicle has been dismantled, the vintage vehicle restorer won’t know about that until they are in the trenches of the restoration.

The restoration of a vintage vehicle is a labor of love and could make a dent in your restoration budget. The reward of this project is knowing your vehicle is a source of pride and beauty.

Wrenchers LLC in Detroit, Michigan, professional vintage car and classic truck restorers, know that Michigan doesn’t provide the best climate for year-round classic-car driving. When they talk with their customers, they always get asked about how to store a classic car in winter, and they offer a myriad of tips. These are their top seven.

It’s important to keep your vintage car in as good a condition during the winter months of vehicle hibernation as it is in the summer months when you’re taking to the highways and byways.

How To Store A Classic Car In The Winter: 7 Tips

The decision and the timeline to store a vintage vehicle or classic car for the winter months is a personal decision. Some owners opt for the “traditional” ending of summer – Labor Day. Other owners watch the weather and take advantage of the non-snow time to keep driving until ice and snow “force” them to store the car for the winter months.

When you own a vintage car, you need to understand that overwintering it is more than just backing it into a garage and bidding it farewell for a few months. Winterization of a classic car or truck is a responsibility that you should take seriously if you want your car to come through the storage season unscathed.

The time you spend now will help ensure that when you turn the key in your car next spring it fires up and the engine purrs like a well-oiled machine.

This list assumes that once you winterize your car, it won’t be taken out and driven on those occasional breaks of winter that Detroit, Michigan seems to enjoy.

Thoroughly wash, clean and detail your vehicle, inside and out. After you’ve gotten all the dirt and debris off it, wax it and polish the chrome. Don’t forget to clean the tires and treat them with a tire-dressing to keep them from drying out and cracking in the winter months. Convertible owners should clean the fabric, treat it and keep the top up during the storage to prevent the fabric from shrinking and potentially ripping in the spring when you start it up again.

Don’t forget to clean the interior of the car. Vacuum it. Polish the leather. Wash the windows, too. Add some silicone/desiccant to help prevent moisture (you can get this at a hardware store.) Make sure the vehicle is thoroughly dry after you’ve cleaned the interior.

Store the vehicle with clean oil. Perform a complete oil change because used oil is loaded with residue and contaminants that could damage the engine during storage. Top off all other fluids. The cooling system needs to contain the proper blend of antifreeze. Some car owners, who don’t have access to temperature-controlled storage, use an engine block heater. Consider changing the brake fluid if it’s a couple of years old.

Storing a classic car indoors in a temperature-controlled space is ideal, but storing it inside, out of the elements, even if it’s not heated, is better than leaving the car outdoors. The vehicle should be stored in a structure with a concrete floor, not dirt (because of moisture issues). Sweep the floor and lay down a sheet of plastic tarp; this acts as a moisture barrier between your car’s underside and the floor.

Remove the battery from the car, and if your car is stored in an unheated space, bring the battery indoors for the winter. You could also use a high-quality battery tender to ensure the battery retains a charge but doesn’t overcharge.

Top off the gas tank and add a fuel-stabilization fluid. The fluid protects the tank, fuel system and the engine from over-wintering corrosion. Plan to drive the car for about twenty minutes after you’ve added the fuel-stabilization fluid to ensure it’s circulated through the gas.

To protect the tires, put the vehicle up on sturdy jack stands. Resist the urge to store your vehicle on cement blocks, as this can, and will, damage the vehicle’s undercarriage. That being said, there is also controversy that storing a vehicle on jack stands can also place strain on the suspension. A solution some car owners choose is to remove the wheels or to help eliminate some of the weight when the vehicle is on the stands.

Keep in mind that even if you have a heated storage space, critters will be looking for a home for the winter and will do what they can to get into your stored car. Use steel wool to plug engine intakes and exhaust pipes. Check the car occasionally to make sure no mice or squirrels or other furry pests have made your car their winter home. Look in the interior, trunk, under the car and even inside the engine compartment to ensure they’re not nesting there and destroying your vintage car or classic truck.

Depending on where you live, you may wonder, can you drive your vintage car in the winter? For classic car and truck owners in the Detroit, Michigan area, the answer may not be as cut and dried as it is for vintage car owners in snow-free areas of the country.

For many classic car owners, when the leaves start falling off the trees, that’s an indication that tooling down the road in your classic car or vintage truck may be winding down for the year. Driving your car for only half of the year may make you yearn to move somewhere more vintage-car-weather-friendly, and the restoration and restomod professionals at Wrenchers LLC understand.

If you’ve been putting off winterizing and storing your car for the snowy months, you may want to give this a read before you put on the tarp and bid your car farewell until spring.

Can You Drive Your Vintage Car In The Winter?

Driving your classic car in the winter doesn’t have to be a no-go. But if you do decide to take your restored vintage baby out on the roads in winter, there are some precautions you should take.

You can take your classic car out for a spin, but do it with an abundance of caution and consider these tips.

Why do you want to drive it? Is it just because you want to get more miles out of enjoying it and don’t want to pack it away for the winter? That’s understandable. Remember, just because you’ve winterized your car doesn’t mean you can’t fire it up and take a spin, but you want to bring it out of hibernation slowly, and you will need to plan to re-winterize it after you’ve had it out.

Check the weather forecast. There are always those days or weeks when the snow melts, the sun shines and you’re yearning for a drive in your classic car, and why not? If the weather permits, take your car out. Remember, though, that even if there’s no snow, there is probably road salt, and you will need to ensure you’re cleaning your car completely – undercarriage included – once your drive is over. Road salt is the enemy of your paint job. Don’t wash your car if below-freezing temperatures are predicted because you don’t want water freezing and damaging the car or its engine.

Taking your car for a drive just might help extend the life of the engine – if you do it with care. Starting the car will send a film of motor oil through the internal engine surfaces, help keep them lubricated and protect the engine from corrosion and oxidation. Don’t just start the car; take it for a quick spin and turn it back off. Depending on the outdoor temps, it can take up to twenty minutes for the oil to warm up, burn off the gunk in the system and offer protection. Taking it for a short spin could do more harm than good.

If you’re determined to drive your classic car or truck this weekend, make sure you’re not revving the engine when it’s warming up. Just let it idle for a bit before you put it in gear and take it for a spin. Check the temperature needle, and when it’s in the “normal” operating temp, you’re ready to hit the road. You may need to bundle up for the drive because it could take about ten minutes for the interior to heat up.

Once you’re done with your drive – or drives – this winter, clean off the road salt and undertake the winterizing steps to protect your car until the next thaw or until spring arrives.
